About Air Hockey

Air hockey was invented in the late sixties by a group of Brunswick engineers who were trying to build a frictionless table, gave up on the original idea, and made a game out of what they had. The physics is the whole appeal: with almost no friction, the puck keeps whatever you give it, so a hard shot stays hard all the way down the table and off the far wall. That is modelled properly here - the mallet transfers its own speed into the puck, so a still mallet is a wall and a swung one is a shot, and the difference between a defensive block and a goal is entirely in how you move. Two people can play on one phone or tablet, each with a finger on their own half, which is the closest a browser gets to standing at either end of a real table.

How do I hit the puck harder?๏ผ
Move the mallet into the puck rather than waiting for it. The mallet's own speed is added to the shot, so a swing is much harder than a block.
Can I reach into the other half?๏ผ
No. Each mallet is held to its own side of the halfway line, exactly as on a real table.
How good is the computer?๏ผ
On hard it leads the puck and plays the angles, and it is genuinely difficult. Easy reacts slowly and leaves gaps, which is about right for a child.
How long is a match?๏ผ
As long as you like - first to 3 for a quick game, 7 for a normal one, or 11 for a proper match.
Why does the puck sometimes slow down?๏ผ
There is a whisper of friction, so a puck that ends up trickling around does eventually stop instead of drifting for ever.
