Breakout was built at Atari in 1976, famously by Steve Wozniak working nights on a design brief from Nolan Bushnell, and almost every bat-and-ball game since is a variation on it. The rule that makes it a game rather than a reflex test is the one people rarely notice they are using: the ball leaves the bat at an angle set by where it struck, so the bat is a steering wheel, not a wall. Once that clicks you stop chasing the ball and start placing it - aiming for the gap at the edge of the wall, cutting a channel up the side and letting the ball loose along the top. This version adds tough bricks that take several hits, unbreakable ones you have to play around, and power-ups that fall for you to catch or ignore.

How do I aim the ball?๏ผ
With the bat. Hitting the ball with the middle of the bat sends it straight up; hitting it with the edge sends it out at a steep angle. Nudging the bat as the ball arrives is how you place a shot.
What do the grey bricks do?๏ผ
Nothing - they never break. They are there to shape the level, and you have to work the ball around them.
What are the falling squares?๏ผ
Power-ups. Catch them with the bat: WIDE makes the bat bigger, ร3 splits the ball into three, SLOW slows everything down, and +1 gives an extra life.
Is it too hard for a young child?๏ผ
Not on the gentle setting with unlimited lives, which is what those options are there for. It turns into a game about keeping a rally going.
How many levels are there?๏ผ
Five, and clearing all five finishes the game with a bonus. Each level opens up differently.
Does it work on a phone?๏ผ
Yes. Slide a finger anywhere on the play area to move the bat - you do not have to touch the bat itself.
