About Odd One Out

A free thinking game for children: pictures where all but one belong together. Animals, fruit, vehicles, weather and clothes, with the question read aloud.

Sorting things into groups is one of the earliest pieces of real reasoning a child does, and it underpins a lot of later thinking - if you can say why a bus and a bicycle belong together and a banana does not, you are categorising. The groups here are deliberately obvious: an animal among fruit, never something vague like things that are round. A clever child who spots a second defensible answer and is told they are wrong learns to distrust their own reasoning, which is the opposite of the point, so each puzzle has only one honest answer.

Frequently asked questions

What age is this for?

About four to nine. Younger children do well on level one, which shows three pictures.

How do you know there is only one answer?

The groups are chosen to be unambiguous - one animal among fruit, say. Vague groupings are deliberately avoided.

Does it read the question out?

Yes, and you can replay it as often as you like.

Can they get stuck?

No. A wrong pick fades and they try again. There is no limit.

What groups are used?

Animals, fruit, vehicles, weather and clothes.
