About Dominoes

Dominoes reached Europe from China in the eighteenth century and the double-six set has barely changed since. The version here is the draw game, which is the one most families play: if you cannot go you must keep drawing, so there is a real cost to holding a bone back and hoping. That single rule is what turns it from a matching exercise into a game - you are always weighing whether to dump a heavy six now or hang on to it in the hope of a better end appearing, knowing that if the round ends suddenly every pip in your hand goes to somebody else. The computer plays it properly at the higher settings: it sheds weight early, leads doubles before they strand it, and keeps the ends it holds most of.

How many can play?๏ผ
Two, three or four. Two players get seven bones each; three or four get five each.
How is it scored?๏ผ
Whoever lays their last bone scores the total pips left in everybody else's hands. Play one round, or a match to fifty or a hundred.
What happens if nobody can go?๏ผ
The round is blocked and goes to whoever is holding the fewest pips.
Why can I not play a bone that seems to match?๏ผ
It has to match one of the two OPEN ends - the numbers at either end of the chain, not any number showing along it.
Is it good for children?๏ผ
Yes - matching numbers is the whole game. Set the computer to easy and it plays whatever fits rather than trying to block.
