Describe It

Describe the word without saying it, and see if the computer works out what you mean.

Describe It

You get a word. Describe it out loud without saying it, and the computer tries to work out what you mean. It genuinely does not know - the word is never sent to it, so it is guessing the same as a person would.

Your browser does the listening, not this site: no audio is ever sent to us, nothing is recorded and nothing is stored. In Chrome the speech itself is recognised by Google, the same as a voice search - if you would rather not, the Type instead button plays exactly the same game.

About Describe It

Describe the word on screen out loud without saying it, and the computer tries to work out what you mean. It genuinely does not know the answer - it only ever sees your description. Six words a round, three levels, free and no sign-up.

The trick in most guessing games is that the computer already knows the answer and is only pretending to work it out. Not here: the word is never sent anywhere. The guesser receives your description and nothing else, and has to name the thing the same way a person across the table would - which is why it sometimes says something wonderfully wrong, and why getting it right first time feels like being understood rather than being humoured. Saying the word, or any of the words listed under it, ends that round on nothing, and it catches the sly forms too: umbrellas for umbrella, cycling for bicycle. Six words a round. It works by typing as well as by talking, and taking turns round a table is the best way to play it.

Frequently asked questions

Does the computer already know the answer?๏ผ‹

No, and that is the whole point. Only your description is sent - the target word never leaves your device, and the guess is compared to it here rather than there.

What happens if I say the word by accident?๏ผ‹

The round ends immediately and scores nothing. It catches the near forms too, so umbrellas and cycling count as saying umbrella and bicycle.

Do I need a microphone?๏ผ‹

No. If your browser cannot listen, or the microphone is blocked, you type the description instead and everything else is the same.

Is my voice or my description stored?๏ผ‹

No audio ever reaches this site and nothing is stored. The typed or transcribed description is sent once so the guess can be made, and is not kept. In Chrome the speech recognition itself is done by Google, as it is for a voice search.

Can we play it as a team?๏ผ‹

Yes, and it is better that way. One person describes, everybody else shouts suggestions, and the computer is the one being tested.
