Konane was played across Hawaii long before written records of it, on stone boards with pebbles of black lava and white coral, and it was serious enough that matches were played for stakes. What makes it unusual among traditional games is that it has no draw and no material goal at all. Taking the most stones means nothing; the only thing that counts is still having a legal jump when your opponent does not. That flips normal board-game instincts on their head, because a greedy chain of captures often opens up the very squares your opponent needs. Strong play is about keeping your own options alive while quietly closing theirs.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the game begin by removing stones?๏ผ
A completely full board has no empty square to jump into, so the first two turns lift one stone from each colour to open it up. Where those stones come from shapes the whole opening.
Can I jump diagonally?๏ผ
No. Jumps go up, down, left or right only. Diagonal moves belong to draughts, not to Konane.
Can I turn a corner during a multiple jump?๏ผ
No. You may chain several hops in a single turn, but every hop has to continue in the same direction you started in.
Do I win by capturing the most stones?๏ผ
No, and that catches most new players out. Captures are just the mechanism of moving. You win when your opponent has no legal jump on their turn, however many stones each side has left.
Can a game of Konane be drawn?๏ผ
It cannot. Every move removes a stone, so the board always runs down and somebody eventually has no jump available.
Is Konane the same as draughts?๏ผ
No. There is no promotion, no diagonal movement, no forced capture rule, and no counting of material. The two games only share the idea of jumping over a piece.
