Swipe on the board, use the arrows, or press the arrow keys. You can follow your own tail - it moves out of the way.
About Snake
Free online Snake with three board sizes, three speeds, optional wrap-around walls and a best score kept per board.
Snake predates the Nokia 6110 by twenty years - it started life as Blockade in an arcade cabinet in 1976 - but the phone is what made it universal, because it was the first game a billion people had in their pocket. The design is close to perfect: one input, one rule, and a difficulty curve that you build yourself with every apple you eat. The interesting part is that the snake is both the obstacle and the score, so getting better at it makes it harder, which is a trick very few games manage. This version fixes the two things that always felt unfair on the old handsets: turns are queued rather than dropped, so a fast corner actually happens, and following your own tail is allowed, because the tail really has moved on.
Frequently asked questions
Why did my turn not register?+
It should. Turns are queued rather than thrown away, so tapping two directions quickly round a corner works. The one turn that is always refused is a straight reversal, which would kill you instantly.
Can I go through the walls?+
If you switch on "pass through the walls" in the options. Off is the classic game; on is more forgiving and good for younger players.
Is it safe to follow my own tail?+
Yes - the tail moves out of the square as your head moves in. It only kills you if you have just eaten and the snake is still growing.
How fast does it get?+
It speeds up gradually as the snake grows, then stops at a floor so a very long snake stays playable.
Is my best score saved?+
Yes, in your browser, and separately for each board size so a small-board record is not mixed in with a big-board one.
How do I play on a phone?+
Swipe anywhere on the board, or use the arrow buttons underneath. Both work.
