About Tongue Twister Trials

Say twenty-six traditional tongue twisters out loud and get scored word by word. Three levels, from ones a five-year-old can manage to the sixth sick sheikh. Free, no sign-up, and it works by typing if you would rather not talk.

Tongue twisters are a real speech exercise as well as a game: the reason they are hard is that they string together sounds your mouth has to physically reorganise for, which is why saying one slowly is easy and saying it quickly is not. Every twister here is traditional - the ones that have been in playground books and elocution lessons for a century - rather than anything invented for the site. The scoring is word by word rather than pass or fail, because getting eight words into the sixth sick sheikh is a genuine achievement and being told simply no for it would be miserable. If your browser cannot listen, or you would rather not talk to your phone, the Type instead button plays exactly the same game.

Do I need a microphone?＋

No. If the browser cannot listen, or you block the microphone, or you simply would rather not talk, the game switches to typing and scores you exactly the same way.

Which browsers can listen?＋

Chrome, Edge and Safari can. Firefox cannot, and neither can some locked-down work laptops. Everything still works by typing.

Is my voice recorded?＋

Not by us - no audio ever reaches this site, nothing is recorded and nothing is stored. Being precise about the rest: in Chrome the recognition itself is done by Google, exactly as a voice search is. If you would rather that did not happen, use the Type instead button.

Why did it mark a word wrong when I said it?＋

Speech recognition mishears, especially with background noise or a strong accent. Long words are given some slack, but short ones are not - the difference between sells and smells is the whole point of the game, so it cannot be forgiving there.

Is it good for children?＋

Yes, and the Warm up level is built for around five and up. It is also genuinely useful practice for anyone working on clear speech.
