How to play Checkers

  1. 1Red moves first. Tap one of your pieces to select it - legal moves are highlighted.
  2. 2Men move one square diagonally forward to an empty dark square.
  3. 3Capture by jumping diagonally over an adjacent opponent piece to the empty square beyond.
  4. 4Captures are mandatory: if you can jump, you must - and multi-jumps continue with the same piece.
  5. 5Reach the far row to crown a king, which can move and jump both forwards and backwards.
  6. 6Win by capturing all your opponent's pieces or leaving them with no legal move.

Checkers - known as draughts in much of the world - is a deep strategy game played on the dark squares of an 8x8 board. Because captures are forced, you can set traps that make your opponent jump into a losing exchange. Control the centre, keep your back row intact as long as you can, and race to make kings.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to capture in Checkers?๏ผ‹

Yes. In standard rules, if a capture is available you must take it. If several pieces can capture, you may choose which - but the piece you move must jump.

How do I get a king?๏ผ‹

Move one of your men all the way to the opposite end row. It is instantly crowned a king and can then move and capture both forwards and backwards.

Can I play against the computer?๏ผ‹

This version is two-player hotseat - two people share one device. An AI opponent is on the way in a future update.

How do you win?๏ผ‹

Capture all of your opponent's pieces, or trap them so they have no legal move on their turn.
