About First Sums

A free first-maths game: simple adding and taking away with big buttons, three levels, and answers that sit close together so children work it out rather than guess.

The thing that makes early arithmetic hard is often not the arithmetic - it is being asked to choose between 7 and 30, which teaches a child that a wild guess is usually eliminable, so they stop calculating. Every wrong answer here sits within three of the right one, so the only way through is to actually work it out. Subtraction appears from level two, and never produces a negative number, because below zero is a genuinely different idea and dropping it in unannounced is how children decide they are bad at maths.

Frequently asked questions

What age is this for?

Roughly four to eight, depending on where they are. Level one adds within five.

Does it do take-aways?

From level two onwards, mixed in with the adding. The answer is never below zero.

Can they get stuck?

No. Wrong answers fade and they try again - there is no limit and no penalty.

Is it read out loud?

Yes, and there is a button to hear the question again.

Does it get harder?

Three levels: within five, within ten, and within twenty with subtraction mixed in.
